Paramount | Betty Boop - Poor Cinderella (1934)

Reviewer: Rayne

I'm always so fascinated by Cinderella shorts and movies that came out before the Disney film. Cuz yaknow, the Disney film basically CHANGED how everyone viewed Cinderella!!!! Suddenly there was this standard of how the story should play out and how Cinderella should look! But this short was made in 1934, almost 2 decades before Disney's Cinderella would be a thing. So, I know what you're thinking...is it good!?!?!? better even!?!

Well...it's...not bad! But not amazing either. There is one main musical number and it's good, nothing special. It's self referential (meaning Betty Boop knows she is Cinderella, how meta!) which I don't think I like much...Also, there's no step mom!!! Just the step sisters who seem to be twins (not nearly as cute as the Hitachiins though...sigh~~). There's a lot of animation and movement to the point it's sort of creepy!! Especially the talking pumpkin....yeesh...*shudders*

But, to give credit, it does indeed tell the basic story of Cinderella, it sounds good musically, and the animation is better than some stuff I've seen nowadays! It's definitely a classic of some sort.

This short gets...

6 carriages out of 10!
